Publication launch: nature, post-nature

Join us for the launch of nature, post-nature, a small independent publication by visual artists Jessye Wdowin-McGregor and Ren Gregorčič in collaboration with designer Kim Mumm Hansen that explores the research and ideas behind an exhibition of the same name, held at Rubicon ARI in March-April, 2019.

nature, post-nature explores the ideas behind the phenomenon of ‘post-natural’ landscapes; marginal sites in which a distinct overlap between urban development and rural wilderness occurs, such as at the edges of cities, in the gaps between factories, under freeways and bordering railways.

Running counter to traditional definitions of nature, post-natural landscapes are commonly described as unremarkable, mundane places without legitimate claims to being natural, and as such are relegated to the peripheries of vision and attention. Although often overlooked, these landscapes are important ecologies that reflect the ability of the natural world to counterbalance environmental disruption caused by human activity.

With an emphasis on light and shadow, built and natural forms and the persistence of flora and fauna in ever restless urban spaces, nature, post-nature explores the commingling of human and non-human narratives that occur in the post-natural landscape. This publication, like the related exhibition, is an experiential device created by the artists for understanding the phenomenology of the post-natural, where a sense of ecological equilibrium can be understood.

Special Presentation: Constructive

You are invited to the unveiling of a new sound work 'constructive'; an adaptation of a Slovenian wind-rattle called a ‘klopotec’, created by Ren Gregorčič in collaboration with Stefan Kazenwadel of Kazenwadel Guitars at Magnet Rehearsal and Recording Studios (11 Roosevlet St, North Coburg VIC 3058) from 6-7PM on 24th November 2018.

The rattle will be used by Ren in an upcoming ephemeral sound and earth work focusing on the Slovenians (including the artist’s paternal family) who were interned at Bonegilla Migrant Camp near Wodonga in north east Victoria during the reception centre’s operation from 1945 to 1971.

[ performance ] you probably don't know but you've already won

You're invited to 'you probably don't know but you've already won'.

Bringing together installation art by Ren Gregorcic and sound immersion practice by Mona Ruijs of Sound Interventions, 'you probably don’t know but you’ve already won' is an experimental project that explores the physiological consequences of the Anthropocene. In this unique performance set within a light installation, participants will be invited to experience the vibrations created by gongs, quartz crystal bowls, a shruti box and other sound tools used by the artists to induce the listening body: one that feels and is conscious of the forces acting on it. Participants are requested to bring a mat, blanket or cushion to rest on during the performance. This event is proudly supported by Arts Moreland.

Click here for more information and to order tickets.

[ exhibition opening ] feel forever feels @ Trocadero Art Space

You are invited to the opening of 'feel forever feels' by Shannon Garrett and Ren Gregorčič at Trocadero Art Space from 4pm to 6pm.

'The exhibition presents a series of photographs  of second-hand sofas printed onto suspended double-backed white linen, ‘discarded sofas are products that once embodied ‘newness’ and luxury before becoming worn and ‘out-of-date’ as a result of human use.

The sofas are relatable symbols of the contemporary relationship between visual experience, technology and wealth within the system of global modernism where aesthetics are formed, elevated as 'taste' (often through textiles and fashion), used and thrown away.’ Ren Gregorčič, artist.

‘Discarded sofas, as objects closely linked human activity and time, are presented as sculptural consequences of human globalisation and applications of ‘taste’.’ Shannon Garrett, artist.

[ solo exhibition ] Local Lonley Girls @ Tacit Galleries

🔥 🔥 F*ck Hottest Beauties Today For Free 🔥 🔥 Send--Me—a—Message— you’re lucky, you have a new email ❤ Hi Ren Gregoric ❤ 3000 babes are waiting for you❤ You’re lucky.

‘Local Lonely Girls’ is an exhibition of ‘hi dear, you’re lucky’ and ‘super sexy’ that explore the broad range of issues around agency, representation, and sexuality that spam emails offering ‘adult’ content propose. Their enforcement of masculine, dominating, heteronormative narratives is also questioned; is exploitative heterosexuality the default position of human sexuality? Do heterosexual men want women to be ‘hot’, ‘lonely’, passive Asian and Eastern European ‘beauties’? What if this isn’t you’re attracted to? What are the effects of the problematisation of same-sex desire that these emails represent? Would we want to these emails to be inclusive?

Tacit Galleries: 123 Gipps St 123 Gipps St, Collingwood VIC 3066.
